POLE to POLE Expedition 2006-2008 – the “most amazing journey of the world”
Christoph Höbenreich hat uns über ein außergewöhnliches Expeditionsprojekt informiert, das im November 2006 startet und Teilnahmemöglichkeiten auch für eine/n junge/n Österreicher/-in zwischen 18 und 28 Jahren bietet:
Die POLE to POLE Expedition ist eine eineinhalb Jahre dauernde Expedition vom Südpol bis zum Nordpol. Zwei Teams von alpin- und expeditionstauglichen Jugendlichen aus der ganzen Welt im Alter zwischen 18 bis 28 Jahren werden sehr naturnahe – das heißt mit Ski, zu Fuß, mit Mountainbike, Segelboot, Floß oder Kajak – vom südlichsten Punkt der Erde durch die Antarktis, Afrika, Europa und die Arktis bis zum nördlichsten Punkt der Erde reisen. Im Zuge der Expedition wird es umfassende Bildungsinitiativen für Schulen und Jugendliche entlang der Expeditionsroute geben.
Die erste POLE to POLE Expedition war ein großer Erfolg: “In February 2000, a group of eight youth set out from the North Pole on a human powered journey across the Polar ice cap, through North and South America, by sail to Antarctica, and then across the Antarctic continent to the South Pole. Travelling thirty-five thousand kilometers, they were powered by human passion, determination, and the belief they could make the world a better place” berichtet der Initiator Martyn Williams stolz. Der Kanadier ist ein erfahrener Expeditionsprofi und Leiter erfolgreicher Expeditionen zum Süd- und Nordpol, auf den Mt.Vinson oder auf den Mt.Everest. Er ist einer der Gründer der Adventure Network International, die Ende der 1980er Jahre die Fluglogistik für Südpol- und Vinson-Expeditionen aufbaute.

Route und Zeitplan der POLE to POLE 2006-2008
November 2006 - The Journey begins at the South Pole- (first Expedition Team)
The Team packs and waits for a weather break for the flight to the South Pole.
December 2006 / January 2007 - Antarctica
Team participants will travel by ski across the breath-taking landscape from the South Pole to the coast of Antarctica.
February / March 2007 - Southern Ocean
Sailing from the coast of Antarctica through the most inhospitable ocean in the world will be a significant test of the Teams' skills and cohesion.
April / May 2007 - South Africa / Botswana
Bicycling north through Africa, the Team works to support the creation of orphanages for the children of AIDS victims and assists in the distribution of solar ovens which address both deforestation and air quality issues.
June 2007 - Zimbabwe / Mozambique
Working with Pole to Pole Advance Teams the Expedition participants will work to support wildlife habitat protection.
July 2007 – Malawi
Crossing a landscape that is filled with ancient cultures the Team will support Advance Team projects to rejuvenate and sustain the economies of the local regions
August 2007 - Tanzania - Kilimanjaro
Climbing Africa’s highest peak the Teams will face high altitude difficulties that test their personal perseverance. At the peak of Kilimanjaro, the first Expedition Team hands the responsibility for the remainder of the journey to the second Expedition Team. When the two teams meet a decision will be made as to which two participants of Team One will continue the journey with Team Two.
September 2007 - Kenya / Ethiopia
The Team works with Advance Teams who are creating wells for water starved communities and working with farmers to encourage fair trade coffee practices.
October 2007 – Sudan
Throughout Africa the Team will work to distribute low cost portable computers for educational use.
November 2007 - Egypt / Nile
Rafting the Nile River through the Sahara Desert the Team participants will immerse themselves in water quality issues.
November 2007 - Mediterranean Sea
Sailing the Mediterranean the Team will continue to focus on water quality issues.
December 2007 - Italy / Switzerland / France
Pushing across the Alps in winter, the Team will give presentations at schools and universities.
January 2008 - UK / Netherlands / Germany / Denmark
At Public presentations to young people throughout Europe, Team participants will encourage audiences to join them in being Global Citizens and taking action to be global leaders.
February 2008 - Sweden / Finland / Norway
Crossing the the Baltic into Scandinavia, Team will turn north and begin the long push to the Arctic.
March / April 2008 - Russia / Siberia
At sub-zero temperatures the Team will ski northwards across the winter tundra.
May / June 2008 - North Pole
Hauling 140 lb sleds to the North Pole the Team will complete their historic journey.
